18 For 2018 | My Goals

[dropcap]On[/dropcap] the 1st January, I can almost guarantee 85% of the world without fail set their New Years Resolutions for the coming year. According to google, resolutions are a yearly tradition in "which a person resolves to change an undesired trait or behavior, to accomplish a personal goal or otherwise improve their life." aka #NewYearNewMe. Ironically enough for yearly resolutions, they are generally abandoned by everyone near and dear (myself included) by the 7th January. I can't speak for everyone else, but I can't keep them, I won't keep them, but I do love making them.

In 2017, my New Years Resolutions boiled down to weight loss. I wanted to turn basically turn into a bodybuilder, who could comfortably run 10k, but still lose 40lbs whilst living a vegan lifestyle (b*llshit). Now at this point I had had a child 8 weeks before, I was very sad and struggling with a newborn. The very last thing I needed was a rigorous diet plan that even the likes of Dwayne 'The Rock' Johnson would turn his nose up at. I was just jumping on the resolution and band wagon, and it goes without saying I didn’t even make it to the first weekend let alone the end of the year. This year I'm in a much better place mentally, but I didn't want to revert back to the typical weight loss goals.

This year I wanted to make New Years Resolutions that I have a chance of keeping, and that will actually improve my life. I'm sorry, but a manic fitness plan and losing 40lbs will not enrich my life in anyway, although it will burn me into the ground.  I've made smarter resolutions this year, 18 to be exact - some call it excessive, I call it motivated, plus 10 resolutions for 2018 didn’t have quite the same ring to it…


1. Finally Finish Decorating. We have now had our home for about 8 months, and still I don't think I can say we have one completed room. I thought I wouldn't be able to stop decorating, but we moved in and I just didn't want to think about it. It's now all just finishing touches, but I'd love to be able to say it was at least 60% complete this year.

2.  Live More In the Moment. I always want more, I'm always looking to the next big thing and it's rare that I can stop and fully appreciate the moment I'm in at any time. I'm guilty of berating myself for not being where I want to be in life, for not earning as much money as someone else, for not having as nice a car, for not having the same opportunities, and it's so easy to overlook just how good the life I have is. This year I'd like to focus less on the small negatives and really appreciate each moment.

3. Play the Irish lottery. This is probably a bit of a backwards resolution - most people set goals to stop wasting their money/gambling, and yet I'm aiming to start. But to hell with it, you've got to be in it to win it and a fortune teller told me that 2018 would be the year of good fortune.....

4. Read More. I used to love reading. My biggest battle in life was deciding which books I'd take on holiday with me each summer, and yet I can safely say I've not picked one up for a good year or two. I spend more time with my eyes stuck to a screen than with my nose in a book, so this year I'm aiming to read two books per month. (Peppa Pig at Harrisons' bedtime won't count).

5. Have A Digital Detox Every Month. Speaking of having my eyes glued to my laptop screen, I spend a ridiculous amount of time on social media, on my phone, scouring google, checking my Facebook every 3 minutes. I took a few days away from Instagram over Christmas, and it really did open my eyes as to how much time I spend on it. Every so often I'm going to have a digital blackout. Switch off my phone, shut down my computer and just spend time with the boys, the way my nights should be.

6. Learn To Cook (A New Meal Each Month). I have 'a new meal each month' in brackets here because truth be told I don't really have many meals that I can cook in the first place to add to. I need to learn to cook, full stop. I'm rotten in the kitchen - I can make chicken, rice and omelettes and that is about my limit, so I'd like to try and change that.

7. Make More Of An Effort With Friends. I fell pretty easily into the trap of losing touch with my friends after having Harrison, I don't think I've ever been great with my phone, but since becoming a mum I've become downright awful. It's not unusual for me to go weeks before replying to a message, it's even less unusual for me to not even open messages at all. It sit on the border of being oblivious, and downright rude and I'm determined to make more of an effort this year.

8. Go Swimming. I say it every single month without fail, but I need to start getting Harrison in the water! We've gone swimming sporadically, but it's only ever been when we are on holiday, and he is not used to the water at all. We go to Gran Canaria in May and I'm hoping he'll be comfortable by the time we leave.

9. Buy A New Car. My little Hyundai i10 has done me well over the last few years, but 2018 may just be the year I have to buy a car that can fit more than my handbag. Jordan calls my little car a go-kart, and he's probably not wrong, so I think I'll have to take the plunge and get a new car.


9. Be In The Pictures. There are only a handful of pictures of me with Harrison in the first few months after he was born, and I made a considerable effort to change last year. In 2018 we'll be traveling a fair bit, and I want to make sure I'll be in the photo albums we look back on in years to come. This is something I've definitely gotten better at, but I know when we go abroad the excuses will start to come out. The bikini, the no make-up, the busy streets - but I'm determined to just be in the picture.

10. See more of Scotland. It's easy to focus on the extravagant holiday's abroad in the warm climates with diverse cultures, but it's even easier to forget the beautiful spots close to home. We can't always pack up and go at a drop of a hat, so I'd love to make the most of the country we live in but have not actually discovered yet.

Health And Wellbeing

11. Stick To One Workout Plan. I'm a big planner, and I pride myself on making (over)complicated workout splits and plans every single time I get a burst of motivation. This means that I change my exercises, my focus and my strengths every few weeks and it can be hard to track progress. This year I'd like to keep the same plan for a quarter, and evaluate at the end of that, rather than after every single workout.

12. Cut Down On Coffee. If this isn't a typical New Years Resolution, I don't know what is. I have no exact number, but for 2017 I was having about 6/7 cups a day. This year I'd like to bring it down to a healthy medium, maybe 2 or 3. Heck, maybe 4 or 5 if Harrison decides sleep isn't for him - baby steps.

13. Get My Eyebrows Done. I don't care what anyone says, if i am having a low self esteem day, there are two things that can make me feel ten-fold better. Tidied eyebrows, and fake tan. I didn't have my eyebrows plucked once in 2017. I used to get them done every fortnight, and they felt out of control if I left them any longer. Nowadays my brows are doing less framing and more covering, so I'll need to start getting back into getting them done consistently.

14. Find A Skincare Regime That Works I say this as though I have a skincare regime at the moment that doesn't work, but really the extent of my skincare regime is clogging my pores with make-up and then forgetting to take it off. I am the worst when it comes to taking care of my skin and I'm finally getting to an age where I probably need to start making an effort. If you have any recommendations of good (affordable) skincare brands please do send them my way!

15. Give Myself A Break. I've never been easy on myself when it came to my body, or my weight - easy is probably not the right word, nice to myself is better. Body positivity is something I could not get on board with and I wasted so much energy on loathing my body and beating myself up for not being an unachievable size. I'm making no weight goals, because weight is completely irrelevant to my happiness. I'm firmly on board with the body positivity movement and I am staying that way.



16. Be more consistent. I've always had a posting schedule in the (very back) of my mind, but never really managed to stick to it. Although I would love to say I'm going to post Monday, Wednesday and Friday something always gets in the way. This year, rather than fall of the face of the earth for a month because I missed the first Monday, I'm going to make a conscious effort to post consistently. (The irony is that it is the 3rd of January and I've already missed my Wednesday post)

17. Grow my YouTube channel. My Youtube channel is something that makes me feel uncomfortable and self conscious. It is something that I find entirely unnatural, but also something that I love to watch others on. The idea of having all of the big milestones recorded is amazing as well - I love having images of Harrison to look back on, but can you imagine being able to watch videos from any point in his childhood?

18. Double my income. Last year was my first full year blogging, and also my first year generating an income from it. I work full time, so the money I earn from this allows us to go on holiday (or to hammer the Next sale in January) and that has been brilliant, but this year I'd love to double that income.

And that's my goals.

Whether I manage to achieve them or not, with every resolution I make I find myself having just a little bit more motivation than before. An extra target, something to aim for, and although I will never meet every single one of my goals, on the off chance I manage to stick to just one of them, I'll have made some progress throughout the year.
